OMG! I wanted to delete spam and then accidentally deleted about 20 others non-spam comments! 20 over latest comments gone… So sorry.
As for Mark, I’m so so so sorry, I replied and now the comments are gone. However, here’s my reply to you for your latest comment:
Mark, only if I have the mood I will update this blog with my notes ;p
In fact I have a job now and I’m doing this part time so it really doesn’t matter much unless I loss this job then maybe venture into this field since computer/IT skill now is one skill that many young children must master. So you can see that it supplements current qualification.

Why as competitor hahaha… Just doing this for fun and one very important thing in this field is to interact with each other more to learn new skill and share.
Go ahead and post as much you like ;p

Wow, I feel like I got special mention and the post is just about me ^_^ Haha, scare me, I thought you got really angry n just deleted everything. I’m new to everything mah, so kiasee scared to do anything wrong =-P
Uhm, during your course, have you actually worked with children?
Venture properly into childcare then, Malaysian childcare needs more talented people!
Is it weird to talk here, or email is better?
July 15th, 2009 @ 10:48 pm
Anyway, I’m just in the starting stages of my blog, any advice?
http://earlychildcare.wordpress.com/
How come your website comes up on google for “childcare Malaysia” but not mine? T.T
It’s probably a bit early for you to even consider recommending my website, since there’s not much there yet =-P (You can if you want! Haha). But if I want to put a link to your website, is that OK with you? (It goes under blogroll right? I’m totally newb =-P)
From your website I’m glad to see that there are people who’re looking for information and discussion on Malaysian Childcare. As my course hasn’t started yet, I’d like to talk to these people to learn more, maybe also can help them =-P

Mark, hahaha… It was deleted by accident ;p
We will have to go tru’ a mandatory practical session during the last semester.
It’s ok to talk here ;p at least it’s not that “quiet” here hahah…
Coz ur side is new, it needs time to get the search engine to archive it. Also need to build your content too so that it will have more chances to be found.
Go ahead if u want to link me ;p
Some of my classmates do visit this site too so it can be a place to interact but they are mostly silent readers to get simplified notes hahaha…
welcome to the bandwagon!

Wah, you all can do a Childhood course…without children? Which University are you distance learning with? Is it Open University by any chance?
What’s the exact age bracket for your “Early Childhood” definition?
Ask your classmates be more talkative lah ^_^ Best way of learning!
Hehe, yea, not much on content so far T.T
Was thinking of giving a little background info on Malaysian Childcare, but I only found one article which is like 2 years old, and then I don’t know if I need/can get the person’s’ permission also.

Mark, no problem as there will be a practical at the end.
Besides, we are all part timers, there is no way for us to do any practical during the weekdays. Full timers will get to have various trips to various related institutions and at the end of the course, they also need to have practical before given the cert.
Most of my classmates are either parents, professional from other fields such as lawyers, bankers, and of course kindergarten/child care centre teachers/operators.
And as part time students and distant learners, you have to take your own initiative to gain experiences, you have to be independent and have high self discipline if you really want to get experiences. You have to go and find your own children to practice what you had learnt unless you are already in the field.
We are currently in diploma only, it’s all about learning the basics and later apply everything before the end of the course to get the cert before we are allowed to go for degree either via distant learning or go to the main campus in West Malaysia or Australia.
Early childhood for M’sia is 0-6 years old.
Hahaha.. We have enough talking in class already.
It’s not Open University, ours is under USQ provided by SEGi. I have no idea at all Open Uni provides such course.
As for the content you mentioned, why don’t just ask for it, it won’t do any harm, as long that you give credits to the owner.

Interesting, sounds like a lot of the people doing your course aren’t even working in Childcare. I hear about this issue a lot though, how people are sick of their jobs and wish they could do something involving children. I wonder how many actually make it =-P
Yea, I’ve been checking out the SEGi info, they seem to be very active! They’re even having an “Appreciation Day For Early Childhood Proffesionals” on 25th July, with a lot of industry people giving talks and stuff.

Wish I could go, but I’m in UK right now =-/ And you’re in East Malaysia right, otherwise you could be the reporter and put everything online for me to see =-P
The other content I mentioned, I e-mailed them, but no reply…I been trying to just find the website for the Malaysian Child Resources Institute, but no luck.
July 18th, 2009 @ 9:53 pm
In fact, SEGi main campus is having their very own kindergarten for practical.
July 19th, 2009 @ 1:55 am
Wow, how lucky for the students. For my course, I have to find my own placements, although the training providers all say they’ve never had people having trouble finding placements. Maybe that’s because the placements are like working for free! =-P
Any idea how much time students spend on their practical there? ie 3 days a week, one a weekend or…?
July 19th, 2009 @ 2:01 am
Is there an option to receive an e-mail notification when a reply has been posted?
July 20th, 2009 @ 2:36 pm
Mark, no idea on the practical thing, I also don’t remember how long will our practical will last.
As for the reply thing, plug in need to be installed, lazy to do it.

Hi Irene,
Do you anything about adult to child ratios in Malaysia? I read it used to be 5:1, then became 3:1, according to the Child Care Centre Act, but I checked the act I didn’t see anything about ratios.
And I also can’t seem to find the specific age brackets for those ratios…
July 24th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm
It depends on different agency, private or government and then under government there are subdivided into various agency again.
Typically for regular children to teacher ratio is between 25:1 to 30:1
As for special needs children to teacher ratio is between 10:1
July 25th, 2009 @ 6:50 am
Ooh, I was referring to younger kids, like those 0 to 1, 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 4 to 5. Any idea bout those?
But is there a website that show the ratio for those older kids that you mentioned?
July 25th, 2009 @ 11:39 am
What I metioned was for 6 and below, the average ratio of all the different early childhood agencies. We are only covering ag 6 and below. I got this from the latest notes given by our lecturer.
Oh, there’ll be one assistant for each teacher.
July 26th, 2009 @ 2:37 am
Hah?!?!
1 teacher and 1 assistant to 25 to 30 kids, even if they’re all 2 or 3 years old?
Here in UK it’s:
• 3:1 for under twos
• 4:1 for two to threes
• 8:1 for three to fives
Even then it’s a big headache, because there will be staff doing paperwork, on makan break, lazy, etc etc =-P
July 26th, 2009 @ 12:04 pm
Well… M’sia… I don’t think there is even a kindy with so little children in a class such as less than 10. That’s the average from the research done from the recent notes I got. I did get a note on the ratio last time which it’s smaller but I don’t want to dig it out from a huge pile of notes and books ;p
If I’m not mistaken, if my memory serves me right, in fact I don’t remember whatever I had learnt in previous semesters for those numerical or theory thing, I’m bad in remembering these. below 4 years old, it’s 1:<5 and above 4, it’s 1:<10
Then again… I don’t think I see any local kindy with such number of students. As for child care centre, maybe…
July 26th, 2009 @ 12:45 pm
Ooh, that sounds more like it. I read somewhere that Malaysia does have ratios of 1:3 (used to be 1:5) for under 1 year, and 1:5 for 2-3 year olds.
But I been digging through all those akta-akta also can’t seem to find it =-P
Lol, “If I’m not mistaken, if my memory serves me right, in fact I don’t remember whatever…I’m bad in remembering these”
